Careers and Work Skills at Woolston College

At Woolston College, careers education and the development of work-related skills are fully embedded within the curriculum. All of our vocational courses are designed to enhance not only practical work skills, but also independent living abilities and the functional application of Maths and English.

Students further build their employability through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, participating in enriching activities such as garden renovation, fundraising for local charities, community engagement projects, and grounds maintenance.

From Years 12 to 14, all students take part in dedicated weekly careers sessions to refine their employability skills, tailored to each of the four college pathways.

Work Experience Opportunities

All students at Woolston College have the opportunity to take part in meaningful work experience placements, which are carefully matched to their interests, strengths, and future goals. These placements offer hands-on experience in a wide range of sectors including:

  • Retail, through partnerships such as with the YMCA Charity Shop

  • Hospitality, including cafes, kitchens, and customer service roles

  • Health and Social Care, with providers supporting adults and the elderly

  • Business Administration, in both educational and commercial environments

These real-world experiences allow students to develop practical skills, build confidence, understand workplace expectations, and explore potential career paths. Our strong links with local employers ensure high-quality placements that are supportive and enriching for every learner.

Skills Builder Accelerator Programme

In addition to curriculum-based and practical learning, students engage with the Skills Builder Accelerator Programme, which focuses on developing eight essential skills:

  • Listening

  • Speaking

  • Problem Solving

  • Creativity

  • Staying Positive

  • Aiming High

  • Leadership

  • Teamwork

Each skill is broken down into 16 steps across four key stages, allowing us to tailor the programme to meet each student's current level and individual development needs.

We are proud to share that in July 2024, Woolston College was awarded the Silver Award from the Skills Builder Accelerator Programme, recognising our commitment to building essential skills for life and work.
